Paulina Carmona-Mora, PhD

Education

  • PhD, Medical Sciences, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia
  • BS, Biochemistry, Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia, Chile

About

Dr. Carmona-Mora achieved her PhD in Australia, studying the molecular bases of Williams-Beuren syndrome, which laid the foundations to view this syndrome as an epigenetic disorder. After her postgraduate degree, she became a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Autism Research Training Program (NIH T32) at the University of California-Davis Department of Psychiatry (Genome Center and MIND Institute).

She later joined the UC Davis Department of Neurology as a senior research scientist, identifying key peripheral blood molecular profiles in patients with ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage. Her prior research experience includes the study of the molecular bases of genomic disorders, epigenetic regulation in autism, and the study of molecular biomarkers for stroke diagnosis. Prior to coming to CNU College of Medicine, she was adjunct faculty at the CNU College of Health Sciences.

Beyond research, she has a decade of experience in international multilateral organizations in science advocacy and governance. She is involved in global and interdisciplinary initiatives related to science policy and science diplomacy, including multilateral projects, policy advising, and capacity building initiatives. Dr. Carmona-Mora recently served as an expert reviewer for the United Nations GEO-7 report and is part of the ORCID Researcher Advisory Council, and of the roster of science experts for the International Science Council (ISC) and UNESCO. She currently serves as leader of the Science Policy and Freedom & Responsibility in Science committee, at the ISC Latin America and the Caribbean.

Research Interests

Dr. Carmona-Mora’s research focuses on understanding how gene expression and regulation contribute to neurological and developmental disorders. She also utilizes advanced genomic and bioinformatic tools to identify molecular biomarkers that improve our understanding of disease mechanisms and offer potential pathways for earlier detection and intervention. Her work integrates discovery science with implementation science to ensure that genomic insights can be effectively translated into clinical and healthcare improvements. At CNU, Dr. Carmona‑Mora is currently working to identify and prioritize genes with high clinical relevance as biomarkers for both acute and developmental conditions.
